Interesting. Something to consider for the next grant. How do you connect it to a regular screen? I don't see any VGA or HDMI support.

David , there is no HDMI video.  I attach a OLED expansion module for a simple display.

The Onion has a built-in webserver running under Node JS with some simple apps. it's pretty responsive for such a low power (only 400 Mhz) server since it is event driven

The 1-wire driver for the DS18B20 temperature probe is built into the kernel and I use the python  library to read it

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

Ankit Rastogi
In reply to this post by David Chan-3
Hi!

I'm a family med resident at U of T and a long-time lurker of your dev
boards ... Dr. Pun's post reminded me to share with you the temperature
monitoring system that was implemented at our clinic as part of a QI
project. The hardware that we used is a Raspberry Pi 2, DS18B20
temperature sensor and a USB Wi-Fi adapter. I wrote a blog-post and
published our source code to github for those interested
(https://github.com/ankitrasto/aetms;
https://ankitrasto.wordpress.com/2016/01/01/part-22-vaccine-temperature-monitoring-with-the-raspberry-pi/).

The raspi2 does not interface with our EMR (we run PS-suite), so runs a
clinic-accessible Apache webserver which serves containing the data
polled by PHP from an SQL database; I use the google charts API to
display it. It also tweets DM's using t, and emails users for
updates/notifications using msmtp.

Since our clinic has multiple fridges, the plan is to implement
lower-cost solutions (maybe an onion omega?! or raspi-zero) for the
other fridges and have all the data rsync'ed from cheaper configurations
to the main raspi2 running the LAMP server which would also run the
central notification service. Cronjobs are used to poll the sensor,
update the webpage, and run a notification script. The whole thing runs
headless.

So far it's been running solidly and polls every 30 minutes. After a
short power outage last week the probe disconnects occassionally for
some reason, but I think some wiring might have come loose, I'll check
it on Monday.

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

David Chan-3
In reply to this post by ianpun
Thanks Ian! I finally got my Onion Omega's from the Onion Store (https://store.onion.io/). Online order was quick and easy but it took a long time for delivery. Looked like it was shipped from China or something because it wrote in Chinese for Canada in the mailing package. There was no duties (like ebay purchase). The prices I paid:
  • 1x Omega - [No Dock] for $19.00 each
  • 1x Omega - [Expansion Dock] for $30.00 each

But I also bought these to get 20% off:

  • 1x Battery Dock for $13.50 each
  • 2x Proto Expansion for $5.00 each
  • 1x OLED Expansion for $15.00 each
  • 1x Arduino Dock for $15.00 each

Discounts : $-20.50 USD

Subtotal : $82.00 USD

Shipping : $8.64 USD

Total : $90.64 USD

It took me just minutes to get it up and running following this page:
https://wiki.onion.io/Get-Started
I look forward to installing the DS18B20 temperature probe to it. I also found that you can buy water proof DS18B20 probes from Amazon.ca for a very reasonable price (instead of buying the transistor and solder it to a wire): http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01937TGQO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00
This is less than $3 a probe.

Did you write your program in Python to read the temperature?
David

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

ianpun
Hi David, how long did you take to get the Onion?

You have to install python light and the OLedExp python driver.

opkg update
opkg install python-light pyOledExp
opkg install nano

and you have to load the 1wire kernel module--- adjust the GPIO input to your liking  - I use GPIO 26 because it's near the edge and easily clippable.

with this command
echo "w1-gpio-custom bus0=0,26,0" > /etc/modules.d/55-w1-gpio-custom

info is here:
https://wiki.onion.io/Tutorials/Reading-1Wire-Sensor-Data

I initialize the OLED at init.d

Here's the python program to read the temperature probe and display it onto the OLED.

Hope this helps!

IAN PUN

#!/usr/bin/env python
import os
import glob
import time
from OmegaExpansion import oledExp
base_dir = '/sys/bus/w1/devices/'
device_folder = glob.glob(base_dir + '28*')[0]
device_file = device_folder + '/w1_slave'

def read_temp_raw():
        f = open(device_file, 'r')
        lines = f.readlines()
        f.close()
        return lines

def read_temp():
        lines = read_temp_raw()
        while lines[0].strip()[-3:] != 'YES':
                time.sleep(0.2)
                lines = read_temp_raw()
        equals_pos = lines[1].find('t=')
        if equals_pos != -1:
                temp_string = lines[1][equals_pos+2:]
                temp_c = float(temp_string) / 1000.0

                return temp_c

# print time.strftime("%Y-%m-%d %X") + " , " + str(read_temp())

status = oledExp.driverInit();
status = oledExp.setDisplayMode(0);
status = oledExp.scrollStop();

status = oledExp.write(time.strftime("%Y-%m-%d %X") +  "   OSCAR Temperature      Temp: " + str(read_temp()) + " C" );

I placed the order on Feb 1 and received the package on the 25th.
Thanks for the detail instruction! Will wire it up tomorrow and see!

The latest templogger using an Omega Onion ($19) - unbelievable!

On 2016-02-26 8:22 AM, ianpun wrote:
Hi David, how long did you take to get the Onion?

You have to install python light and the OLedExp python driver.

opkg update
opkg install python-light pyOledExp
opkg install nano

and you have to load the 1wire kernel module--- adjust the GPIO input to
your liking - I use GPIO 26 because it's near the edge and easily
clippable.

with this command
echo "w1-gpio-custom bus0=0,26,0" > /etc/modules.d/55-w1-gpio-custom

info is here:
https://wiki.onion.io/Tutorials/Reading-1Wire-Sensor-Data

I initialize the OLED at init.d

Here's the python program to read the temperature probe and display it onto
the OLED.

Hope this helps!

#!/usr/bin/env python

David,

I notice you didn't use the Onion USB Dock which has a 5V to 3.3V regulator..  What type of 3.3V power supply did you use for the Vin when you connected directly to the Onion?

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

I just cut one end of an usb cable and connect the red wire to VIN 3.3v. I then connect the other end to a cheap cell phone usb power supply. It's been running all night. Doesn't seem to cause any problem.
I will be visiting the Dollar Store to get a small match box case for this. I wish they make a small case for it.
Still working on a python program to check temperature within range every 5 min and only send warning messages when out of range every 30 min.

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

HI David

But USB cable supplies 5V , not 3.3V.  Although these parts may tolerate 5V for some time, it will increase its power dissipation, and you can burn it out.  If you connect to 5V direcctly, maybe simply , you can add a couple of cheap silicon rectifier diodes (they provide a voltage drop of 0.7 V each - so use two of them in series) . The Omega doesn't use much power. probably only 200mA.

Like to see your python program when you're done.

You are probably right. I ordered a few of these:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/171842550323

I want to keep the packaging small so I would like to try to do without
the dock if I can.

The following is for the expansion dock but may serve as starting point:

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

In reply to this post by David Chan-3

Hi all,
I hope you will pardon the intrusion, I realize I'm not a regular contributor to this mailing list.

This thread was brought to my attention because I had also been bitten by the temperature monitoring bug and "maker ethos", and created a product and service solution for it. It uses components similar to those you are discussing (micro controller, ds18b20, etc.) and provides similar functionality, but with some differences I hope you would find valuable, such as:
A/C power with rechargeable backup-battery, SMS and email notifications, centrally managed data and graphing service so that it is maintenance free, support for using wifi or 3G cellular, and a hosted website for unlimited clinic staff to be on alert notification or to review historical data, a flatware probe to avoid fridge insulation leaks, a piezo buzzer to provide audible alerts, and custom-length probe cables. All of this is arranged on a printed circuit board in a 3d-printed case (no loose wires :)

FridgeSentry.ca is the company I started to make this a turn-key solution for clinics. We were recently featured in BlueBird Inc.'s February newsletter, and have been looking for more clinics that would be interested in helping piloting the product and steer the future direction (an OLED display sounds interesting, are there EMR integrations that would be valuable?)

I'm contemplating the service to be in the neighbourhood of $10/month for active monitoring with no up-front device cost. Of course as a first-time entrepreneur looking for early adopters I'm flexible, and would appreciate having a discussion about the value that such a product and service might provide.

If you or someone you know would be interested, please contact me - I'd be thrilled to take you through a demonstration.

Thanks for your time - happy hacking :)

My Onion died after a day of running as you predicted Ian! The chips
were very hot (and fried obviously). Learned my $19 lesson. I still have
another one to play with and I ordered 4 more. If any of you want to buy
it from the Onion store directly you get $5 off - use this discount site:
http://onion.refr.cc/TBHVQCH

I am having so much fun with this I even wrote another grant application
to put it in 500 clinics across Ontario! I am even going to try to do
vaccine inventory with it using a QR code reader. Any suggestion from
the community?

Re: New OSCAR Vaccine Temperature Logger

LOL , David,  yes running the Onion at 5V burns it out. A switching step down convertor like the one you showed me is better and more efficient than just a diode drop.

That's great! 500 across the province - you'll need contract manufacturing!  As you know, I've been trying to tell Toronto Public Health about my temperature logger for years and always been ignored.  My abstract for the OntarioMD conference was rejected too. As always , the barrier is political and economic and not technical. I'm glad to give you a hand.

I'm adding a LCD to my Raspberry Pi temperature logger uses a I2C interface.  I find the OLED screen is tiny and I can't read it!
